Wandering through narrow alleys at whose end you either encounter Street-Vendors, Monkeys or the nearby Astrology/Yoga-Center certainly makes mankind hungry.
Especially when one aged endeavored man with Turban and 3 teeth missing tries to sell you his marvelous flute by seducing your ears with some of his self-composed greatest hits.
(Kinda reminded me of the little cookies you get offered in food courts which led you ending up buying half a dozen packages of spoken cookies!)
Yet, something was different… He had no food (at least not for us) and his flute skills were as good as mine were in 3rd grade.
Not so much!
My mind stayed with the food court. A memory of long bygone days. Right in between of yellowish ripe mangos, sticky rice, and fried vegetables. An essence of Thailand.
Well, India is not Thailand, but food there shall be plenty!
After walking back, down the alleys, searching for a nice place to eat, the touristic places didn’t fulfill what our stomach was craving for. Too much meat! Korean style (Koreans seem to love Varanasi!)
Actually, we adopted one at the airport but that’s a story for another day!
One last tactic was left in our repertoire. Where do the locals eat?! Said, done. On the left-hand side, a place emerged. Twice as big as our hostel toilet! Maybe more hygienic, maybe not. Questions like that are better not asked in India.
Long story short, we ended up getting freshly prepared Uttappa, (a dish from the southern part of India) Samosa ( ), and fried eggplant.
The end? No fancy Food description?!
That’s what this story is all about. Food can take you on an adventure where the food itself is not the main contributor to the story but without the food, the story would not exist. Which on the other hand, makes it to the main contributor!
So let’s honor the food and appreciate the experiences it enables us to live through. Both physically and mentally.
